Oregon Coaching Job - Who's in the Running For the Oregon Coaching Job?

how do you become a life coach

Many candidates are interested in coaching jobs in Oregon. Some coaches are temporary hires while others are permanent. Mullens desires a long-term, permanent coach. Taggart wasn't a long-term coach, and Cristobal got sucked in by a suitor.

Willie Taggart

Oregon was one of many programs that considered Taggart for this offseason. Taggart was offered $20 Million over five-years to coach the Ducks. Taggart turned down the offer and was offered the Florida State job. Taggart however felt strongly about the possibility of rebuilding UO. He also rejected the $30 Million offer by Florida State.

Taggart was passed over by the NFL to become a coach. He spent time at Stanford under Jim Harbaugh and at Oregon before he began his coaching career. His philosophy focuses on excellence and discipline, with the first priority being accountability. He stated that he exhorted his players towards "chasing greatness."

Willie Aranda

Aranda was appointed Baylor Bears head coach in 2020. He has a track record of success. After winning the national title at LSU in 2019, he moved to Baylor, where he led the Bears to an 11-1 record and the Big 12 title. Cal Lutheran was his home, and he went to Cal Lutheran. He then became a defensive coordinator for Utah State and Hawaii.

After Mario Cristobal's departure to Miami, Oregon is looking for a new coach. In a Duck Territory podcast we reviewed some of the coaching candidates. We gave each candidate a rating by Sportsline, and we also discussed the pros/cons of hiring someone with a Pac-12 coaching background.

Justin Wilcox

The University of Oregon looks very different than it did when Wilcox joined the University in late 1990s. Facilities have improved and expectations are high. Mario Cristobal, the last coach at this school, won 10 games in his final season. This included a win against Ohio State. He was harshly criticized for not winning more games. Mark Helfrich who was the former coach was also a native Oregonian. After the season, both were fired.

The Ducks are now interviewing candidates for their position as head coaches. In addition to Wilcox, Oregon athletic director Bob Canzano has also been in contact with two other candidates, one of whom is in the NFL. The Ducks want to quickly hire a coach. The Ducks are eager to hire a coach as soon as possible. Every minute that goes by increases the likelihood that a recruit will move on to another program.

Mario Cristobal

Mario Cristobal was hired to be the University of Miami's head football coach. He has also coached at Florida International University (FIU) and Oregon State University. He played college football for the Miami Hurricanes, where he won two national championships as an offensive tackle. He was awarded First-Team All-Big East Conference honors in 1992 and 1993. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1993 and went on to earn his master's degree in 2001.

Cristobal will likely take over a team that has been in difficult times. The Hurricanes are currently 7-5 and their head coach Greg Diaz has won just 21 games in his three seasons here. After Miami's firing of Blake James, Diaz had his job security questioned. Miami is scheduled to play Washington State in the Sun Bowl later this month.
